Woodward: White House Telling Reporters “You Will Regret Doing This” Makes Me “Very Uncomfortable”

Here’s WaPo’s Bob Woodward discussing the threat he received from the White House after calling out Obama on his “nasty” sequester “strategy”.

The Obamaian Universe

A place where everything revolves around the fixed planet of public spending.

  by Daniel Henninger

It may be that we have to move beyond politics alone to explain events in Washington. We are in the fifth year of the  Obama presidency, and Washington is still dead in the water. Four straight years in which the government of the United States of America fails to enact a budget is, well, amazing.

The sense is growing around Washington, and this increasingly includes Democrats, of living in an alternative universe. Barack Obama gives his State of the Union speech, the sequester looms, and the president flies around the country giving speeches. He’s had virtually no contact on the sequester with the legislative branch. Now he’s going to meet with them after the sequester happens. This is unusual. We need to look outside normal politics for explanations.

Obama Demagoguery Supplemented by a Touch of Cruelty

by Peter Wehner

In the Great Sequestration Debate, here’s what we know: (a) The president has paternity of an idea he now characterizes as a brutal and senseless assault on America. (b) The president and his then-chief of staff, Jack Lew, misled the public about their role in giving birth to the sequester idea. (c) House Republicans have twice passed legislation to avoid the sequester cuts with carefully targeted ones, but Senate Democrats refused to act. (d) Mr. Obama has brushed off a Republican plan to give him flexibility to allocate the $85 billion in spending cuts, which makes no sense if the president wants to replace reckless cuts with responsible ones.

Whatever one thinks about the merits of cutting $85 billion out of an almost $3.6 trillion budget, the effort to portray the cuts as ushering in days of tribulation, distress and anguish, of trouble and ruin, of darkness and gloom is–how to put this?–insane.

If the sequester cuts go into effect, domestic agencies would have to cut 5 percent from their budgets after having received a 17-percent increase during the president’s first term (not counting the more than a quarter-of-a-trillion stimulus bonus). And our budget this fiscal year would still be larger (by some $15 billion) than it was in the last fiscal year.

But what makes this particular episode somewhat different than past ones is that Mr. Obama has supplemented his demagoguery with a touch of cruelty. That is, he has made it clear that he wants to inflict as much harm as possible on Americans in order to make the cuts live up to the hype. The president’s greatest fear is that the sequester cuts will kick in and life will go on. So he’s threatening to pass over wasteful programs in order to target more essential ones.

I thought the last paragraph of this piece put Obama very clearly in perspective:

It is really quite remarkable, this concoction of willful deceptions, hyperbole, demagoguery, mismanagement, and deliberate harm. And to think that a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Barack Obama promised to put an end to cynicism. Instead he has added massively to it. The harm he is doing to our political culture is very nearly incalculable.

What’s Up With the Democrats?

Liberals call for $10.10 minimum wage – more than Obama requested

The White House is coming under pressure from liberal Democrats in the House  and Senate to press for a minimum wage hike as high as $10.10.

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) argues President Obama “missed the mark” in calling  to raise the minimum wage to $9 in his State of the Union address, and he met  with White House staff last week to argue for a higher number.

What Up With Republicans?

Republicans Working on Funding Bill

House Republican leaders seem to have averted a potential rift in the conference, garnering wide support for a continuing resolution that will move as soon as next week.

GOP leaders called a Wednesday afternoon meeting to brief members on the strategy for the CR, where Speaker John A. Boehner urged members to continue fighting in unison, on Capitol Hill and in their districts, to keep the sequester’s spending cuts in effect.

“We’re on the side of the angels,” the Ohio Republican told his members in the closed-door conference meeting, according to a source in the room.

House Appropriations Chairman Harold Rogers, R-Ky., on Wednesday helped explain the details of his bill at the special meeting of the Republican Conference. He is drafting a fiscal 2013 spending package that would effectively cap spending at around $974 billion. It uses mechanisms put in place by the two recent budget control measures (PL 112-25, PL 112-240) to make the cuts. Those measures would keep in place a cap of $1.043 trillion on discretionary spending for fiscal 2013, but the sequester kicks in March 1 and cuts that back to about $974 billion.

54% Say Raising Taxes More Likely To Hurt Economy Than Spending Cuts

Most voters continue to see raising taxes as worse for the nation’s economy than cutting government spending. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 54% of Likely Voters think raising taxes is more likely to hurt the economy than cutting government spending. Twenty-seven percent (27%) see cutting spending as worse, while 11% say neither will hurt the economy.more:

Not News: Projected Growth in Unpaid Bills Shows State of Illinois on Path to  Total Breakdown

On Monday, the Insitute for Illinois’ Fiscal Sustainability (IIFS), an outfit  associated with the Civic Federation, a “nonpartisan” organization which appears to have leftist instincts and funding, warned that the state  government’s $8 billion  stack of unpaid bills will  grow to $22 billion in five years. IIFS correctly blames out of control  pension costs, and recommends several reforms which don’t seem to match the  urgency of the situation.

One thing the report doesn’t do, concerning which the press appears to be  completely incurious, is estimate how long it will take vendors in President  Barack Obama’s Democrat-dominated home state to get paid if the backlog of  unpaid bills really becomes that large. The answer, in brief, is: “so long that  no one with a brain will want to do business with the state, likely causing its  government to completely collapse.”

Why Blacks and Women Should Not Have Guns

The  Democratic Party believes that it owns the African-American vote, and it also  looks to women for much of its support.  This support requires serious  reconsideration.  The Colorado Democratic Party, as represented by State  Rep. Joe  Salazar, has said openly that women are too mentally unstable to handle  firearms responsibly.

There  are some gender inequities on college campuses, this is true, and universities  have been faced with that situation for a long time. It’s why we have call  boxes, it’s why we have safe zones, it’s why we have the whistles. Because you  just don’t know who you’re going to be shooting at. And you don’t know if you  feel like you’re going to be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following  you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble when you may actually not be,  that you pop out that gun and you pop, pop a round at  somebody.

Salazar  has therefore said unequivocally that women lack the mental capacity to  distinguish between Condition Orange and Condition Red (the terms used by  Colonel Jeff  Cooper and Front  Sight), or between bare  fear and reasonable fear (Masaad Ayoob).  Condition Orange or bare fear  refers to a perceived threat, as might happen when a stranger walks up and asks  if he can “borrow” a dollar, or a woman “feels like” somebody has been following  her around.  You cannot draw a weapon on somebody in Condition Orange, or  out of bare fear.  Only under Condition Red, or with reasonable fear, can  you draw a weapon.  Salazar has said for the record that the female brain  is not capable of making this distinction and will therefore “pop out that gun  and you pop, pop a round at somebody.”

Salazar’s  subsequent apology is meaningless because he then voted with his party to ban  concealed carry on Colorado college campuses.  This proves that he is sorry  only that he got caught saying aloud what he and his fellow Colorado Democrats  obviously think.  The phrase “Too late, chum” comes to mind, and so does  the chess rule that says you don’t get to take back a losing  move.

What,  then, do Salazar and his fellow Colorado Democrats think those empty-headed  women should do to stop a sexual assault?  Salazar mentioned call boxes,  whistles, and safe zones.  A rapist, who is almost always stronger than a  woman and who may be armed in the bargain, is not likely to allow his victim to  reach a call box or blow a whistle.  If the “safe  zones” are anything like the ones the United Nations created in Srebrenica,  that speaks for itself.

Colorado  Democratic State Senator Jesse  Ulibarri then recommended that people bring ballpoint pens to gunfights.   He added that an unarmed man stopped Jared Lee Loughner, the individual  who shot Gabrielle Giffords, when Loughner stopped to reload.   Ulibarri therefore thinks it is acceptable to let a deranged gunman kill  six people and wound thirteen others so he has to reload (or run out of  ammunition) before it is possible for unarmed people to mob  him.

So according to Dems women should be able to go into combat, presumably caring a weapon(s) but cannot be trusted with a firearm to protect themselves against a rapist. Hmm..

   All the President’s Thugs

Hey, Bob, you can’t say we didn’t warn you.  We knew this White House was capable of attacking even the great Bob Woodward for telling the truth.

You could have listened to Michael Barone.  He saw it coming even before Barack Obama was elected. In October 2008, he penned “The Coming Obama Thugocracy.”

I experienced it when DOJ press harpy Tracy Schmaler yelled at a half dozen reporters, as the White House official did to you, about my under-oath testimony involving the New Black Panther dismissal.  Her victims included Pete Williams, Quin Hillyer, and Shayrl Attkisson.  After Schmaler’s thug tendencies were well-known, she was nurtured and promoted within the Thugocracy instead of being canned as any administration before this one would have done to her — Republican or Democrat.

Schmaler has since been appointed a Made Man of sorts, entering the rarefied private sector air of David Axelrod’s shop.

Schmaler’s story is typical of this gang.  Her shouting, threats, and rants at reporters would have rendered her unqualified to serve in the press shop of a state department of agriculture.

But there is something unique about the Obama White House.  It borrows tactics and standards from the darker figures in history — threats, projection, unrepentant dishonesty, towering columns in stadiums, and even bloody mayhem like Fast and Furious hatched for political purposes.

Richard Nixon seems like a fluffy kitten compared to this crowd.

Which brings us back to you, Mr. Woodward.  What’s happened when you, of all people, are the bad guy? Had you ventured into any cocktail party in Silver Spring or Takoma Park just a few years ago, you would have been treated like a hero – liberal Washington’s very own version of Pittsburgh Pirate Bill Mazeroski who with one swing of a bat brought down the reviled Nixon.  “Maz” never had to pay for a meal in Pittsburgh after that October afternoon in 1960 when he delivered a World Series.

That used to be you, Bob.  But now, you’re the problem!

You, of all people, threatened by a Democrat White House.  So where are your defenders?  Where are the new hipster reporters of the left to defend you? Where have all the flowers gone, they used to ask.

But this is serious stuff.  When the elder statesman of the industry that guards the First Amendment is threatened by the White House, it marks a dangerous turn. When other “reporters”  join in, it is even more dangerous.

Lanny Davis: Obama White House Threatened Washington Times Over My Column

Lanny Davis, who served under President Bill Clinton as special counsel to the White House, told Washington, D.C.’s WMAL this morning that the Obama White House had threatened the Washington Times over his column, warning that the Times would suffer limited access to White House officials and might have its White House credentials revoked. Davis, a centrist Democrat, is sometimes critical of the Obama administration’s policies.

Davis was speaking with Breitbart News editor Larry O’Connor, who co-hosts a morning show on WMAL. Davis said he had never spoken publicly about the threats before, but they seemed relevant after the White House told legendary reporter Bob Woodward that he would “regret” insisting that the White House had come up with the idea of the budget sequester, which President Barack Obama is now urging Congress urgently to revoke.

The White House has vehemently denied the claim in Woodward’s book, though the claim has been in the public domain for several months since the publication of the book, The Price of Politics, in mid-2012. Democrats and a slew of sympathetic liberal journalists have joined the White House in attacking Woodward–a remarkable turn of events given his elite status in the media as part of the duo that brought down President Richard Nixon in 1973.

NOW he thinks the threats to the Washington Times are relevant? A little late to the integrity party Lanny. As usual.

American Student Punished for Refusing to Recite Mexican Pledge

A Texas high school student has filed a federal lawsuit against her school and her teachers after she was punished for refusing to salute and recite the Mexican pledge of allegiance.

The Thomas More Law Center filed the suit on behalf of Brenda Brinsdon alleging the McAllen Independent School District violated the 15-year-old girl’s constitutional rights when she was forced to recite the Mexican pledge and sing the Mexican national anthem.

Click here to read the lawsuit.

Brinsdon, who is the daughter of a Mexican immigrant and an American father, refused. She believed it was un-American to pledge a loyalty oath to another country.

Ironically, the school district has a policy that prohibits a school from compelling students to recite the American Pledge of Allegiance.

The district also has a written policy that excuses students from reciting text from the Declaration of Independence if the student “as determined by the district, has a conscientious objection to the recitation.”

“There is a sad trend in public schools across our nation to undermine American patriotism,” said Richard Thompson president of the Thomas More Law Center. “But it’s encouraging to see students like Brenda stand up for America despite pressure from school officials.”

The TMLC told Fox News the district ignored its own rules when Brinsdon refused to recite the pledge of a foreign country.

What’s most troubling is the different treatment for someone wanting to opt out of reciting the American Pledge of Allegiance compared to someone as a matter of conscience wants to opt out of reciting the Mexican pledge,” spokesman Erin Mersino told Fox News.

A spokesman for the McAllen Independent School District told Fox News they had not seen a copy of the lawsuit.

The recitation of the Mexican pledge and the singing of the Mexican national anthem was part of a 2011 Spanish class assignment at Achieve Early College High School.  The teacher, Reyna Santos, required all her students to participate in the lesson.

When Brinsdon refused to back down – she was punished, the lawsuit alleges. She was given an alternative assignment on the Independence of Mexico. The teacher gave her a failing grade – and then required the student to sit in class over a period of several days to listen to other students recite the Mexican flag.

The lawsuit states Brinsdon offered to recite the American pledge in Spanish but the teacher refused her request.

“It’s astonishing that this Texas school would deny Brenda her right of conscience and free speech not to pledge allegiance to a foreign country,” said Thompson. “Too many Americans – including those of Mexican descent – have suffered and died protecting our nation.”

And while she is fluent in Spanish and English and is proud of her Mexican heritage, Brinsdon is a “true-blooded American,” Mersino added.

Mersino said it was especially troubling to watch video of students in the class standing up, extending their arms straight out, palms down and reciting the pledge of a foreign country.

“It’s disturbing – it truly was troubling,” she said.

Voting Rights Law Draws Skepticism From Justices

WASHINGTON — A central provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 may be in peril, judging from tough questioning on Wednesday from the Supreme Court’s more conservative members.

If the court overturns the provision, nine states, mostly in the South, would become free to change voting procedures without first getting permission from federal officials.

In a vivid argument in which the lawyers and justices drew varying lessons from the legacies of slavery, the Civil War and the civil rights movement, the court’s conservative wing suggested that the modern South had outgrown its troubled past and that the legal burdens on the nine states were no longer justified.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. asked skeptically whether “the citizens in the South are more racist than citizens in the North.” Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, whose vote is probably crucial, asked whether Alabama today is an “independent sovereign” or whether it must live “under the trusteeship of the United States government.”

Justice Antonin Scalia said the law, once a civil rights landmark, now amounted to a “perpetuation of racial entitlement.”

  1. Indeed, the sky is falling and Joe Biden is at the door. Fire that double barrell through the door, by all means. How are we so lucky to have this POS just one heart beat away from the POTUS? Though, in my honest opinion, the POTUS is just a whacky as Biden, though in a different way. They are both liars, bloviating jacka##es, and egotistical show-offs who have their own interests and agendas in pursuit, and to hell with America and the American people.

I find it hard t believe that there seems to be not one responsible member of Congress who is willing to call out Biden on his egregious blatherings that could get some underinformed nit-wit in serious trouble. After the nut tells you to shoot through the door couldn’t you use that as a defense if you kill an innocent? After all he is the VP in charge, and the POTUS has put him in charge of gun control.

With these two running this country – Obummer and blabber mouth – we’re on a slippery slope to Hades with no brakes on the sled. Seems to me that sequestering is the least of our problems.

    • Couldn’t agree more. No way to run a country with Obummer and Blabbermouth at the helm. I keep waiting to see some of that oft touted “brilliance” from Obummer. Still waiting. And waiting. All I see is a narcissist who has no more intellect than the bloviating bore/boor at the end of the bar in taverns around the world. Thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room when he’s just the loudest. And most annoying. You have to wonder how stupid his acolytes have to be to be fooled. Sequestration, while not the best option, seems the only one that can get done. If Obummer worked with Congress and the Senate to make the cuts as easy on the people of this country as possible it wouldn’t be a problem. But he’s only trying to score points. That’s not leadership. That’s a stupid little man playing games. Games that injure the people he is supposed to help. He’s a liar and a fraud and a POS. Biden? He’s just a loud mouth idiot.
